With 5,000 staff members serving 41,000 students in 51 brick-and-mortar buildings, Henry County Schools is Georgia's 7th largest school district and Henry County's largest employer. Mr. Aaryn Schmuhl is the Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Leadership Services. Mr. Schmuhl works with curriculum, instruction, assessment, Personalized Learning and leadership for the county school system. One of his biggest projects is launching Personalized Learning throughout Henry County.
"Personalized Learning is a instructional philosophy about giving kids what they need, when they need it, and how they need it."
In May 2014, I sat down with Mr. Aaryn Schmuhl, Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Leadership Services in Henry County Schools, to discuss Personalized Learning. On our show, Mr. Schmuhl announced the schools that launched with Personalized Learning for the first time. For the 2014-15 school year (Cohort 2015), 4 middle schools and 2 high schools incorporated Personalized Learning. For the upcoming 2015-16 school year, 7 elementary schools and 2 high schools will be incorporating Personalized Learning into their schools as well.
Each school has a documentary produced in their first year of Personalized Learning. I had the great opportunity to work alongside Luella Middle School Personalized Learning Project Manager, Misty Garvin, to produce their documentary. I spent the week at LMS to film, edit, and publish the Luella Middle School Vision for Personalized Learning Documentary.
The Cohort 16 Personalized Learning Convening was held on June 4-5, 2015. This event was intended for the new launch schools to present their vision and consult with each other to gain ideas and receive feedback. This two day event featured the 9 new launch schools collaborating and sharing knowledge. Many employees from the Board of Education were in attendance as well as Cohort 2015 launch schools to provide veteran expertise to the new launch schools. Pictures from the event are on my Twitter account, @AJohnsonIA.
Henry County Schools is continuously filling their mission to ensure success for each student as Personalized Learning is increasingly fulfilling that vision. With schools continuing to launch with Personalized Learning, more and more students are receiving the individualized support and technology enabled instruction to become successful.
